All-American Vs Original Sonic Smasher: What's The Difference?
If you think of the band Sonic Youth or Sonic the Hedgehog before you think of Sonic burgers, then you probably haven't tried the chain's smashburgers yet. Here at Tasting Table, we've long been singing the praises of Sonic's underrated double cheeseburger. But the crispy around the outside, juicy in the middle smashburger patties offer a unique dining experience for the fast food drive-thru scene. Still, even on the same menu, not all burgers are created equal. What's the difference between the All-American Sonic Smasher and the Original Sonic Smasher? Here's what you should know.
The All-American Sonic Smasher features two smashburger-style Angus beef patties. Those patties get seasoned with their own blend of spices and cooked-to-order, ensuring a hot, juicy bite every time. Then, those patties get topped with two slices of American cheese, crinkle-cut pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and mayo — all on a plush potato bun. At a Sonic location in Ohio, the burger à la carte currently costs $7.39.
Like its All-American counterpart, the Original Sonic Smasher features two of the same Sonic smasher beef patties, plus two slices of American cheese, crinkle-cut pickles, and diced onions on a potato bun. From here, the two burgers diverge. Unlike the All-American Smasher, the Original Sonic Smasher skips the lettuce and tomato, keeping it simpler with pickles and onions alone. This burger also trades the ketchup and mayo for another condiment: creamy, tangy Smasher sauce.
The All-American adds lettuce and tomato, while the Original comes with Smasher sauce
The presence (or absence) of that luscious orange sauce is largely what sets these burgers apart. While the Sonic website does not list the specific ingredients in its condiments, Sonic Smasher sauce offers a complex bouquet of savory, umami, sharply acidic, and sweet flavors, all rounded out by the creamy mayo base. When applied to the Original Sonic Smasher, this sauce gives the burger a more pronounced umami-forward, briny, tang alongside the pickle and onion toppings. By comparison, the All-American Smasher carries the brighter flavor profile of a classic cheeseburger, thanks to the fresh lettuce and tomato (different strokes for different folks).
At the same Sonic location, the Original Sonic Smasher currently costs $7.29 on its own. Compared to the All-American version, this burger comes at a slightly reduced price for the absence of the fresh lettuce and tomato. Subsequently, its mouthfeel arrives crispy and gooey — a departure from the crunchy, fully-loaded mouthfeel of the All-American with its generous veggie stack. It is worth noting that other locations, such as one in Idaho, price both burgers at $7.49 each.
All in all, the Original Sonic Smasher, which debuted in 2024, could be described as a smashburger with special sauce. On the other hand, the All-American Sonic Smasher (which followed in early 2026) might more-aptly be described as a classic American cheeseburger made with smashburger patties.
