Don't Always Reach For Betty Crocker Or Pillsbury: The Best Gluten-Free Brownies Are From This Overlooked Boxed Mix

Gluten-free baking has come a long way. There have been advances in equipment, milling, and recipe development, giving us everything from indulgent flourless chocolate cakes to fluffy loaves of coeliac-friendly bread. There are also a lot of top-notch boxed mixes available nowadays, as demonstrated by Tasting Table's ranking of the best brownie mixes, where the top spot went to a gluten-free option. Curious to see which others could impress, another one of our experts focused on gluten-free brownie mixes specifically, and their favorite wasn't from Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, or even King Arthur. It was a smaller, often overlooked brand: Miss Jones.
Of the 10 mixes our expert tried, the Miss Jones Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix was by far the best. The California-based company was founded by a former supply-chain worker at Apple who wanted to help home bakers take shortcuts with organic, responsibly-sourced products that taste homemade -– and our tester felt like this was evident immediately. The brownies were rich and moist, with a perfectly chewy texture, crackly top, and balanced sweetness.
The taste was so much more natural than the brownies from Pillsbury, which landed eighth on the list due to their artificial, flat flavor. The Betty Crocker tray, which came sixth, was pleasantly grit-free and fudgy, but it didn't have the same deep cocoa flavor the Miss Jones mix had. The winning brownies were simply more elevated and bakery-worthy, which seems to be the opinion of others too, if online reviews are anything to go by.
'Not your grandma's gluten free'
The Miss Jones Gluten-Free Brownie Mix has a five-star rating on the company's website, where customers have called it the "absolute best brownie mix" and noted how it's "not your grandma's gluten free." Some people even prefer it to a traditional mix. "Tastes better than a regular brownie in my opinion — without all the gluten heavy feeling regular brownies leave you with," one person wrote in a review.
A lot of Walmart shoppers seem to be fans too. One said, "This was my first time trying gluten free brownies — I'm really impressed! The taste and texture are perfect. They bake nice and even, and they're really fudgy and delicious! You can tell these are made with high-quality ingredients." Another wrote, "I really was shocked at how great these brownies were! My kids absolutely loved them. They mixed really well together and cooked evenly. Even the brownie sides/crusts weren't too hard!"
However, some people find the chocolate flavor to lean toward the darker side and the texture to be very dense. If you want to try another option, our traditional brownie tester thought the fudgiest brownie mix in stores was the Gluten-Free Ultimate Fudge Brownie Mix from King Arthur Baking Company. Like the Miss Jones mix, it relies on butter rather than oil, so you can expect a rich result. Our gluten-free tester just felt they were slightly gritty, but they still easily trumped Betty Crocker and Pillsbury.
