Betty Crocker may be fictional, but her influence on American home bakers over the last 100 years is very real. The Betty Crocker brand was America's best-selling cake mix brand in 2026, and its cake mixes are an absolute pantry staple that have saved many occasions. Tasting Table had the pleasure of sampling nine Betty Crocker cake mixes, and one flavor that ranked surprisingly high was the Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake, which came in second place. It surpassed the chocolatey Devil's Food cake (which ranked third) and the Red Velvet flavor (which came in 7th place).
Our taste tester was impressed by how much this cake mix resembled a homemade cake. It had a strong smell of spice with cinnamon in the forefront, which also translated into taste, though our tester confirmed that the classic carrot cake notes were definitely present, too. The final cake came out brown, but its rich aroma made up for the lack of orange color. Overall, it was ruled as a craveable and appropriately autumnal dessert.
The mix itself needs only the addition of water, vegetable oil, and eggs, and it bakes within 30 minutes or so. Its potential doesn't end with cake, either. You can easily turn the mix into muffins, carrot cake pops, a carrot bread loaf, and even scones.
The old-school Betty Crocker Carrot Cake mix still holds up
Judging by the online reviews and the 4.7 rating on Amazon, the Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix is held in high regard. "I love this mix. It is delicious, moist and simple to make. Its my go to cake mix and there is usually an extra box in the pantry for when we get sweet teeth," wrote an Amazon reviewer. "Delicate Crumb. Not [too] sweet or spicy," reported another customer about the mix's balanced flavor. Some have even shared creative ways to upgrade the cake with various additions. "Just add shredded carrots, walnuts and raisins. Frost with cream cheese frosting!!!! Oh yummy and easy!" advised another.
Though delicious, the carrot cake mix is not entirely without flaws. It does lack a bit of moisture, which is kind of ironic given its "Super Moist" title. The slight dryness was observed by our taste tester, and many reviewers share that opinion. Of course, you could always add one tangy ingredient to help with that. Another criticism people have pointed out is that the flavor of this cake is cinnamon-forward, so if you're specifically looking for a distinctly carrot-flavored cake, this one might not be for you. As one reviewer explained, "Tastes more like a mild spice/gingerman cake. [...] Bottom line is it has a good flavor but tastes nothing like carrott cake."
