Oily Ground Beef? Add A Small Bowl To Your Pan And Watch The Magic

Cooking ground beef is fairly easy. But one of the most common mistakes when cooking ground beef is using too much oil, which leaves a greasy mess. How do you drain it all? Thankfully, we've found a cool trick to trap grease in the pan — no extra cleanup or mess required.

This trick requires just one extra tool. Start by finding a small glass or heat-safe bowl. After thoroughly cooking the ground beef, turn off the heat, and push the beef around to leave a circle in the middle of the pan. Place the bowl upside-down in that circle, cover the pan with its lid, and let it sit for a few minutes. After a while, lift the lid, scoop the beef onto your plate, and then lift the bowl to see the excess grease pooled underneath!

Why does this work? Chalk it up to physics! The upside-down bowl traps heat and steam, but once it cools down, it helps condense grease and oil. As the pressure inside the bowl drops, the pressure outside the bowl rises, pushing the grease toward the middle of the pan. All that melted fat and oil is then forced under the bowl — making for super-easy cleanup.

Tips to make this trick work even better

This simple trick can help you can skim fat from ground beef in seconds. But with a few extra steps, you can pull off this hot tip (pun intended) even more smoothly. For one, the bowl can get pretty hot: Use an oven mitt or a dish towel to grab it out of the pan after it has collected the oil. You can even try grabbing it with a strong pair of tongs so you don't burn your hands.

Scooping the meat can be tedious. But the right tools can help you easily transfer it from pan to plate. We recommend using a large serving spoon to scoop the meat into a bowl or serving dish, then go from there. If you've got a pack of ground beef and aren't sure what to do with it, check out these 16 ground beef recipes, just make sure to use this magic trick to capture the excess oil first.

Tried it! It works! After cooking ground beef, turn off the heat, set a container in the middle, cover with a lid, set a timer for 10 mins and presto – all the grease is drawn under the container! #physics #cookingwithphysics
