But some hold a special place in their hearts for a flavor that's a little less common: Betty Crocker Cherry Chip. The cake mix is a beloved favorite for longtime customers, but finding a box on the grocery shelves has become quite the sleuthing exercise.

Cherry Chip is exactly what it sounds like: a fruity, cherry-flavored cake studded with cherry-flavored chips. It's part of Betty Crocker's Super Moist line, which uses pudding in the mix to produce a soft texture. Just like other boxed cake mixes, it's simple to prepare, requiring just a few basic ingredients like eggs, water, and oil. 

The unusual flavor explains some of its cult following. Cherry-flavored cake just isn't as common as chocolate, vanilla, or even red velvet, so this Cherry Chip flavor offers something distinctly different and a little retro. Considering that Betty Crocker's first-ever cake mix is also considered old fashioned today, it makes sense that boxed mix flavors change with customers' tastes throughout the decades. But fans aren't merely nostalgic about the idea of it. Online reviews are filled with customers trying to track down actual boxes of the stuff. "This has been my favorite cake mix since childhood," one baker wrote on the product's page at Walmart. "Wish more stores carried it locally, but it is worth the wait to order."

The cherry scarcity has become something of a running saga in certain baking circles. On Amazon, a reviewer wrote: "I was so happy to find this on Amazon. It is pricey but I cannot find it in Michigan...It is our daughters favorite and I've made it for her birthday for at least 30 years!" Another lamented, while also throwing a little shade at another popular flavor: "This was our absolute favorite cake from when we were kids, and it's just not available anywhere now. Funfetti does not compare."

There's also genuine confusion concerning Betty Crocker's official response to fans questioning the availability. In April 2026, the brand responded to a customer on Walmart, apologizing that "supply has been very limited lately" but to "check a few online retailers, as some may still have remaining stock available." This vague statement has done little to comfort fans, as many wish to keep their childhood tradition of cherry cake going for another generation. 

America's best-selling cake mix brand is also the only company making a cherry-flavored cake mix, so there's not even any duplicate flavors to recommend. For now, fans are left scrambling to buy overpriced versions at online retailers — that is, when the cake mix is even available on those sites.
