Is Buc-Ee's Actually A Family-Owned Chain?

When a roadside business becomes as enormously popular as Buc-ee's, it's easy to imagine a savvy corporation or cluster of high-rolling investors lurking behind the charming persona. After all, this Texas-born chain has expanded far beyond the Lone Star State, with sprawling travel-center stores more akin to fan-fave supermarkets than ordinary fuel stops. But Buc-ee's ownership is actually much simpler than you might expect: Though not "family owned" in the traditional sense, Buc-ee's is privately owned by the original co-founders who merged their individual small convenience stores to form today's well-loved enterprise.

The story begins with Arch "Beaver" Aplin III, who opened a convenience store in 1982 near his hometown of Lake Jackson, Texas. A few later, Aplin teamed up with Don Wasek, who had his own operation nearby, and the pair expanded the operation from there. Reports in recent years reveal that the duo are equal-part (50-50) owners of Buc-ee's Ltd., which has no current plans to become publicly traded. The brand doesn't offer franchising, so its stores have no independent ownership contracts per location.

The Buc-ee's website reveals that its intention is to remain privately owned. This way it can focus on customers instead of on the bottom line. This isn't a company that rests on its laurels. Instead, it continues to proactively grow. After establishing at least 56 locations in 13 states, mostly in the South, the Buc-ee's owners have begun expanding into at least six additional states in 2026. Plans for years 2027 and 2028 continue the rollout with at least 12 additional stores.

Bigger is apparently better when it comes to Buc-ee's

As for who handles the nuts-and-bolts of keeping the Buc-ee's empire afloat, there's not much definitive information out there. Reports within the past several years place Aplin as the force behind the brand's marketing and expansion plans. He chooses each new location, attending groundbreakings and store openings, but largely leaves the daily operations to others. Wasek, on the other hand, has been said to handle Buc-ee's day-to-day operations.

While Buc-ee's spreads its wings across the American landscape, there's at least one store feature getting left behind. In prior years, most Buc-ee's stores were still built in the small convenience-store format, about 3,000 square feet, rather than the company's more famous 12 supersized "travel center" locations. Today's ongoing expansion appears to forego smaller stores altogether, focusing strongly on a "bigger is better" concept.

Known for remarkably expansive floor space, Buc-ee's holds name-claim to the world's largest convenience store, with a 75,593 square feet outpost in Luling, Texas. Many of the current travel centers are also known for hosting elaborate, famously clean restrooms and 100 (or more) fuel pumps — and the expansion stores are following suit.
