1. Gabrielskloof Chenin Blanc
Gabrielskloof winery in South Africa runs by the philosophy that its wines are all designed to showcase the characteristics of the terroir. As such, a deep respect for the land is built into every practice, with biodiversity and sustainability at the forefront of the agricultural techniques used. With vineyards located close to the Atlantic Ocean, the cooling breezes help infuse freshness into all the wines.
The Gabrielskloof chenin blanc highlights this bright quality, made with fruit grown in the Bot River subregion of Walker Bay. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts in a combination of old oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, then left to mature for several months on the lees (the spent yeast cells). This infuses a creamy richness to the crisp palate, adding a roundness that brings dimension to the wine. Notes of white peach, apple, quince, and citrus are displayed in the glass, along with hints of lanolin and nuts.
The vibrant acidity and fresh mineral character make this wine an excellent match for seafood or creamy pasta dishes. Retailing at just under $20, it's a great choice when you're looking for a bottle to impress without breaking the bank.
2. Folk Machine Clarksburg Merritt Island Chenin Blanc
Hobo Wine Company in Sonoma County started with just a couple of barrels of wine in the early 2000s. The operations have since expanded but remain small-batch, with a strong focus on maintaining the same values that led to the current success. Close ties with the community are also foundational to the winery's ethos. In the cellar, the philosophy is low-intervention winemaking, which Hobo Wine Co. describes as "unforced." The winery both has its own vineyards and sources fruit from others with similar farming values.
The Folk Machine chenin blanc is made with organic fruit grown on Merritt Island in the Clarksburg AVA in Yolo County, California. The wine boasts a full palate thanks to the ripe fruit, while remaining crisp with a high acidity due to the cooling breezes in the vineyard. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete eggs and stainless steel tanks. Notes of green apple, apricot, lemon zest, and quince mingle with wet stone on the palate. Serve the wine with shellfish or try it with a soft cheese for its palate-cleansing properties. At $19 a bottle for this California gem, it's a steal.
3. Domaine Pichot Vouvray
Vouvray stands out as one of the top areas for chenin blanc wines in the Loire Valley, and you can grab this bottle by Domaine Pichot for $20. The region has chalky, flint, and clay soils that give the grape a unique character that's hard to recreate. The Pichot family has been involved in the local wine industry since the 19770s, consistently innovating while staying true to the terroir. The current winery has been around since 1996, combining top vineyard sites from the surrounding area. Since the start of the 2020s, there has been a push toward organic and biodynamic agriculture, highlighting the winery's dedication to the environment.
Domaine Pichot's Vouvray is an excellent example of the off-dry style of chenin popular in the area. Still, it remains fresh and vibrant on the palate, making it a great pairing for sweet and savory foods. The wine is fermented mostly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a small proportion in large, old wooden vats. On the palate, the aromatics are bold, with notes of honeysuckle, quince, melon, and citrus, balanced by an underlying mineral essence.
4. Santa Julia Chenin Dulce Natural
Chenin's versatility is evident in this Argentinian bottle by Santa Julia Winery in Mendoza. Notes of white peach, apricot, lemon, and grapefruit are present, along with fresh herbs. It can be enjoyed chilled as an aperitif, with spicy cuisines, or with fruity desserts, making it a true crowd-pleaser. Retailing for around $12, if you're unsure about sweet wines, this is a perfect bottle to sample.

At $18, you'll want to scoop up a few bottles for all of your drinking needs.
6. Les Indigènes Chemin Organic Natural Chenin Blanc

Serve it with seafood, Mediterranean grilled vegetables, or a roast chicken for a seamless pairing. Retailing for $19, this organic and natural chenin blanc is sure to be a hit.

The brand's philosophy is to work with primarily independent wine growers who are committed to environmental sustainability and minimal intervention, allowing the fruit and terroir to shine.

The vineyards are located on the border of two distinct regions in Anjou, offering a diverse taste of the terroir, and consequently, of chenin blanc's expression. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks to keep the aromatics fresh. It displays a delightful contrast of lively acidity and honeyed richness, characteristics of the best chenin blancs. 10. Dry Creek Vineyard Dry Chenin Blanc

The Dry Chenin Blanc is made from fruit from a single vineyard, emphasizing the qualities of the Clarksburg terroir. The wine is fermented in 100% stainless steel tanks to ensure nothing takes away from its fruity, aromatic character. Floral notes of jasmine and geranium are present on the nose, along with hints of melon, peach, guava, and pear. Citrusy notes bring out the pleasant acidity, which remains well balanced on the palate. Served with seafood or a tangy goat cheese, this is sure to be a hit. It sits at around $19 per bottle, which is a steal for a wine of this caliber. If you can't get enough and are ready to splurge, try Dry Creek's Sparkling Chenin Blanc too.
Methodology
To select the wines for this list, I looked for options covering the key chenin blanc growing regions in the world. While the grape can be used to produce higher-end wines, I focused my search on affordable bottles I had tried from smaller wineries, or introductory wines from larger wineries. These wines offer an excellent value and highlight the best characteristics of the chenin blanc grape. They're wonderfully aromatic and pair well with a wide range of foods, making them a great option when looking for a bottle under $20.
