How To Order A Crispier McDonald's Hash Brown With One Request

An estimated 5 million people in the U.S. make McDonald's breakfast part of their morning routine every single day. From the chain's coffee, which is among the best coffee in fast food, to its many options for sandwiches, sides, and sweet treats, there are a number of ways to configure a McDonald's breakfast order. But how can you make sure your breakfast is prepared to your liking? Well, in terms of the hash browns, there is a way to guarantee you get a crunchier, more satisfying hash brown each and every time. A trick that is going viral on TikTok explains that by ordering your hash brown either "extra crispy" or "well done," you will get a hash brown that is noticeably crunchier than the standard version.

Not only that, but customers report that the potatoes on the inside of a well-done hash brown have a softer, creamier, more mashed potato-esque feel than usual, thus making both the outer and inner layers of the breakfast potato treat superior with this adjustment. And just like with the trick for ensuring a saltier, crispier Egg McMuffin, it requires saying just a few extra words when you place your order.

Why aren't all McDonald's hash browns well done if they're better that way?

So, if a McDonald's well-done hash brown is objectively better — crispier on the outside, creamier on the inside — than the way they are typically made, then why isn't well-done the default? Well, a former McDonald's corporate chef spilled the tea on that topic on TikTok. And perhaps not surprisingly, it all comes down to efficiency.

To put it simply, making the hash browns well done for every single customer would result in longer cooking times. And longer cooking times mean a longer wait for food and customers not getting their orders as quickly. So, according to the chef, McDonald's deliberately cooks the hash browns to the inferior consistency for the sake of keeping those lobby and drive-thru lines moving in the morning to make sure as many people can get breakfast as possible before McDonald's stops serving it for the day
