A fizzy, frosty, savory beer cocktail
A michelada is a hearty beer cocktail with enough vegetable content to practically be considered a salad. Fact.
OK, so lots of vegetables or not, this isn't a health beverage so to speak. It is, however, delicious and the perfect festive drink to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Or, if we're being candid, it's also great for helping that headache you might have the next day from celebrating the unofficial holiday a little too hard. It is the ultimate hair of the dog.
While bases and flavorings for micheladas can vary, ours is robust with chunky fresh salsa and crushed tomatoes puréed into a smooth tomato base. Jalapeño juice gives it a generous kick of heat, and lime juice adds a nice hit of acid. We finish it off with a frosty dark Mexican beer.
Purée 1 cup of crushed tomatoes and ¾ cup of chunky fresh salsa together. This base mix makes enough for 4 micheladas.
To make a single michelada, salt and pepper the rim of a pint glass. Pour in a quarter of the puréed salsa mix, 1 tablespoon of pickled jalapeño juice and the juice of 1 lime. Add ice; top with a dark Mexican beer, such as Negra Modelo; and stir. Garnish with a lime round. Serve the remaining beer in the bottle on the side.
