There's a reason why some champion the West Coast as the best coast, and it's pretty convincing after a few hours outside, sipping smoky mescal and feasting over tacos. Take advantage of all that sun (and the cool Bay breeze) in the summer by bringing dinner outside.
Here are some of the best spots to take advantage of all the great outdoor dining San Francisco has to offer.
① Ragazza: Escape the city hustle at this garden oasis hidden in the backyard of a Lower Haight pizzeria. Sharon Ardiana fires up thin Neapolitan-style pies showcasing NorCal finesse, like one with preserved lemon and wild arugula.
② Trou Normand: Indulge your inner carnivore in this Financial District courtyard. There's all the charcuterie you can snack on (squid-ink salami, chicken and preserved orange pâté), plus plenty of French wines to pair.
③ Comal: Who needs tea lights when you've got small bonfires lighting up the spacious Berkeley patio? Keep your hands warm and your belly full with modern Mexican fare from chef Matt Gandin, like potato and artichoke-stuffed enchiladas and wood grilled-cod tacos. Plus, there are tequila and mescal flights.
⑤ Pizzeria Delfina: It's always good to have a second pizza place just in case, you know, you get hungry. This Palo Alto outpost of the beloved pie slinger is the perfect canopied (and heat lamp-powered) space for twirling spaghetti pomodoro and grabbing slices of clam-studded pizza.
⑥ Dirty Habit: There's nothing better than a night outside, warmed by fire pits and illuminated by twinkling lights strung above. Oh, wait, there is. At the patio of his SoMa hotel restaurant, chef David Bazirgan levels up with duck corn dogs and churros with passion fruit.
