Quiche is a wonderful thing on a conceptual level — pastry coupled with eggs, cream, and basically any other savory filling you desire, bringing together the best of both worlds from pie and omelet. If you don't have time to make one yourself, you'll understandably want to know what your most superlative other option is. In Tasting Table's view, the absolute best store-bought quiche comes from Meijer.

In our recent ranking of seven store-bought quiches, Meijer Frederick's Spinach, Goat Cheese & Sun-Dried Tomato Quiche emerged victorious, beating out rivals from brands such as La Terra Fina and Giant Eagle. So distinctive was this deeply savory repast, Tasting Table's critic felt there was no comparison with its competitors. "It's unlike any of the other quiches I tried," our correspondent wrote. "Even the Meijer brand's bacon and four-cheese option. It takes everything good from that pork and cheese tart — like the soft-set egg custard and buttery, flaky pie crust — and brings it to a whole other level."

The goat cheese, smoothly and creamily mixed into the quiche's egg custard itself, was noted as the particular standout element. The sun-dried tomatoes were also a welcome addition. "When you land on one, you immediately get that concentrated pop of both sweet and tart," our critic said. While the spinach was less of a flavor sensation, the structure and health benefits it brought to the quiche were no less welcome. Brought together, this all added up to a clear winner: "It's just the kind of warm, savory meal you'd want to start your day with," our writer concluded.

The range of sides this quiche can be paired with make it a highly versatile meal

Our critic was not alone in having a positive assessment of Meijer's offering. Amongst customer reviews on Instacart, one satisfied shopper wrote: "Very good, always keep one in the freezer. Large enough for two meals." Another enthused: "Very tasty and filling. I love that it is not drowned in salt because my husband has high blood pressure ... My picky chihuahua who will not eat just anything also loves it." High praise, indeed.

As it lacks any of the meat you would find in, say, a classic quiche Lorraine, Meijer Frederick's Spinach, Goat Cheese & Sun-Dried Tomato Quiche would make a great, hassle-free, vegetarian dining option. Honestly, all you need to enjoy a really good quiche is a fork and an appetite, but there are numerous accompaniments this one would pair well with. If you'd like to keep it Mediterranean-style but still meat-free, a salad of mixed green leaves tossed in the go-to French vinaigrette that Julia Child swore by would work well. Should you be carnivorously inclined, some cured deli meats like salami or chorizo would add a cold component to an otherwise hot meal. Finally, if you're a fiend for pickles and would enjoy the contrast of texture and flavor a sharp, vinegary bite would provide, you could bring heat to your plate with some spicy Chicago-style giardiniera.
