Try a weekend without cheesesteaks

Our forefathers were on to something when they settled in Philadelphia.

Stop by Reading Terminal Market for towering pork sandwiches and first dibs on early-season strawberries and asparagus. Or, if you'd rather have the best spring ingredients prepared for you, bring your own bottle of wine to tiny newcomer Russet, and prepare for a bounty of just-sprouted vegetables in light French and Italian preparations.

Across town in Old City, the city's retro-minded Berley brothers--who've made old-fashioned ice cream cool again at Franklin Fountain--have brought their Wonka touch to a turn-of-the-century candy shop. Not to be out-sweetened, Federal Donuts goes beyond sugar, rolling freshly fried donuts in Indian cinnamon and lavender-scented vanilla.

It'll be a weekend of dining independence.
