Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipes

We tasted-tested and ranked 3 of the Internet's most popular recipes

We all have our go-to recipe when we want to whip up a batch of "the best" homemade chocolate chip cookies, but truth be told, there can be only one. We pledge allegiance to master chocolatier Jacques Torres's extra-large chocolate chip cookies but wanted to put a few of the Internet's most popular recipes to the test.

To find out which one is the best, we did a blind taste oft Martha Stewart's soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies, Serious Eats' best chocolate chip cookies and Pinterest's most pinned chocolate chip cookie recipe so far this year.

First, we discussed what makes the perfect chocolate chip cookie. Most editors agreed it should be crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and be made with at least a teaspoon of salt to intensify the flavor of the cookie. Most taste testers also had strong opinions about which chocolate chips are best, debating between bittersweet and semisweet chocolate chips.

Accompanied only by a big glass of milk, in the end, there was one clear winner.

Our Top Pick

① Serious Eats' Best Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Before our editors even took a bite, they were impressed by the cookie's golden color. "This has everything I want in a cookie," one editor said after the initial bite, while another mentioned how the cookie-to-chocolate chip ratio was on point. From Serious Eats' J. Kenji López-Alt, this cookie easily took first place and had us going back for seconds.

Runners Up

② Martha Stewart's Soft and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipes

This cookie had a nostalgic factor our editors enjoyed, while some felt that it needed a little more salt. It also had the ideal chip-to-dough ratio, with the right amount of chocolate in every bite. This Martha-approved cookie was definitely a crowd-pleaser.

③ Pinterest's Most-Pinned Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Although this post has been pinned more than 96,000 times, according to Pinterest, it wasn't our editors' favorite. We were left wanting more chips and more salt (this recipe calls for roughly less than half the amount as the others). An edible cookie to be sure, but not the one we'd serve when friends come over to binge-watch Martha & Snoop.
