Punch Out, Drink Up

The best happy hour spots in the city

Excuse us, but your 5 o'clock is here. Time for cheap drinks and eats after your incredibly productive and fulfilling day. Pick your go-to juice (beer, wine, alcoholic slushies) and check out our top spots to get (in)appropriately buzzed before 8 p.m. Presented in no particular order, of course.

Baby's All Right
Prep for (oftentimes) free indie shows at this hip Williamsburg spot by knocking back $3 Pink Babies (a boozy frozen grapefruit lemonade) and High Life from 5 to 8 p.m. Feed the beast with a burger and fries or grilled cheese for $8.

Grand Central Oyster Bar
Join the commuting crowd in the basement of this lovely landmark. Oysters are $1.25, beers $4 and martinis a very civilized $8 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Should you decide to continue the fun with any new BFFs, confirm what state they're heading to before you commit.

169 Bar
Knocking off early? Happy hour at this LES dive starts at 1:30 p.m and continues through bedtime (7 p.m.) daily: in addition to the kitschy décor, you've got $3 beer and shot combos, $1 off cans and draughts and $2 off anything else you can think of.

Rusty Knot
Find your sea legs at this nautical-themed far West Village institution from 4 to 7 p.m: Busch pints and well drinks are two for one and the sunset view over the Hudson is free.

Fritzl's Lunch Box
Head to Bushwick from 4 to 7 p.m. to snack on chicken wings served with queso cotija and sesame seeds accompanied by a glass of Grüner Veltliner, Côtes du Rhone, or Narragansett for $11. Or, skip that pesky protein and just drink: the same wines are half-off.

Prima
Two-for-one cocktails and oysters? We'd rate that a buy-valve. Every day, from 5 to 7 p.m., this East Village seafood joint is shucking oysters and shaking cocktails, from sweet little Malpeques to creamy Montauk Pearls.

B Flat

This little Japanese basement jazz bar in Tribeca offers $8 cocktails (ginger Caipirinhas, Manhattans, margaritas) alongside bar snacks (fried chicken, shishito peppers) daily from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Penrose
Soda spikes are the daily draw, from 4 to 7 p.m., at this UES staple: Your choice of sprit plus root beer, tonic, grapefruit soda or ginger beer, all house-made, for $7. Not feeling the fizz? Draught beers are $5, wines $6.

The Copenhagen
A placid, white-tiled oasis of Danish cool smack in the middle of Canal Street/Tribeca madness. Specials, from 4 to 7 p.m. daily, include $5 house-made frikadeller (meatballs), $3 pork rinds with herb mayo and $5 Evil Twin Low Life on draught.

JBird
Head to the UES between 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for $6 wine and $8 swizzles (Pisco Sour, Gold Rush), plus bar snacks, such as Korean fried chicken ($8), smoked gouda mac and cheese ($9) and pork sliders with fries ($9).
