Italy Just Opened A Free, 24-Hour Wine Fountain

The Italians are doing something right

One Italian town just gave new meaning to la dolce vita with the introduction of a free, 24-hour wine fountain.

The fountain (and its consistent flow of red wine) has appeared in Caldari di Ortona, in the Abruzzo region, just outside of Rome, Condé Nast Traveler reports. The location of the free wine is along the Cammino di San Tommaso, a route that thousands of pilgrims and tourists take from Rome to Ortona, where they visit the city's cathedral and the remains of Thomas, one of Jesus's disciples, The Local reports.

The fontana del vino was installed by angels living among us, or the folks from the Dora Sarchese vineyard. The winemakers were inspired by a similar fountain along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain and teamed up with the nonprofit that maintains the Cammino di San Tommaso to bring their locally produced wine to anyone who desires it.

A post on their Facebook page reads, "Fountain of Wine is a welcome, the Fountain of Wine is poetry." However, they also add that it is not to be used for "drunkards" or "louts."

Needless to say, we'll be booking our plane ticket.
