It turns out there’s one thing most people do every morning that could be making them happier. No, it’s not working out and it’s definitely not checking emails, but rather it’s their morning cup of joe. A new survey released by Café Don Pablo roasters reports “those who drink coffee at the start of their day are 13 percent more likely to be happier in the morning.”

That small cup of coffee can even ramp up your workflow and productivity in the office. Survey takers said it increased their productivity by an average of 41 percent.

So what’s in your cup that’s actually making you so happy? Gary L. Wenk, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Ohio State University, explains that “scientists have known for many years that coffee stimulates the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine produces the euphoria and pleasant feelings that people often associate with their first cup of coffee in the morning.”

With an average of 59 percent of Americans drinking a daily cup of coffee, according to National Coffee Drinking Trends, it’s no wonder there are new coffee shops popping up all over the place.

While it’s still not a scientific fact that coffee makes you happier, this news is enough to keep us sipping our morning lattes.
