Eat The Museum

MOFAD will open this fall in Brooklyn

Our two favorite topics—food and drink, obvi—will finally get their own brick-and-mortar museum this fall in Brooklyn. Ten years in the making, the MOFAD Lab's first real exhibit, "Flavor: Making It and Faking It," will explore the flavor industry, reports The New York Times. The multisensory installation (we're hoping there will be some grown-up scratch-and-sniffs, but who knows) will be staged in a 5,000-square-foot space in Williamsburg that the museum plans to call home for the next five years. "When you think of the full museum as a restaurant, MOFAD Lab is a test kitchen," MOFAD's executive director Peter Kim tells the Times.

As for the full museum, the team is still hunting for a larger space and the funding to make founder Dave Arnold's ambitious idea a reality. There are a few food museums here and there, but nothing like what Arnold and Kim are planning: a place that explores the intersections of commerce, science and food. "Food deserves a museum on the scale of The Metropolitan Museum of Art," Kim says.

And for visitors who get hungry from the exhibits, don't worry. The team plans to open a museum restaurant sometime down the line.

"Flavor: Making It and Faking It" will run October 28 through February 29. Tickets go on presale September 28.
