Raised, glazed, twisted and puffed: The Bay Area has all the handmade doughnuts you could possibly want. We completed the totally unenviable job of slogging through them to deliver you our favorites--in no specific order.
① Meyer Lemon Huckleberry at Dynamo ($3)
It's hard to choose a favorite at this Mission go-to, but we stand behind this confection's sugar-berry glaze and tart, lemony, fluffy dough.
② Apple Fritter at Bob's ($1.95)
We love the massive apple fritter loaded with cinnamon and bursting with sweet bits of apple flavor, but the trick is to show up around 11 p.m. and ask for whatever's hot.
③ Naughty Cream at Doughnut Dolly ($3)
This pastry's bright, velvety vanilla bean crème filling is both naughty and nice. Just get here early: The daily selection routinely sells out by 1 p.m.
④ Churros at Market & Rye ($5)
Only available on weekends. Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside and served with a traditional chocolate dip.
⑤ Salted Maple Donut "Whole" at Donut Savant (75 cents)
The sea salt cuts perfectly into the maple glaze of this bite-sized treat. We weren't able to stop at just one.
⑥ Raised Twist at Johnny Doughnuts ($2.50)
The secret to the puffy, crisp dough? Mashed potatoes. A maple glaze topped with brown sugar makes this a perennial TT fave.
⑦ Glazed Cruller at Rolling Pin Donuts ($1.15)
This San Bruno joint's classic doughnut manages to be both light and airy, while also incredibly, almost sinisterly moist.
⑧ Maple Cinnamon Cornflake at Pinkie's Bakery ($3.50)
Almost cakelike, these Saturday-only doughnuts are a delightful mouthful--sweet and dense with a cornflake crunch.
