Easy Pickled Apples Recipe for Tacos

At Chaia Tacos in Washington, D.C., you'll find more than standard cheese and salsa on top of the delightful vegetable-forward tacos on offer. One example: This quick-pickled apple and serrano chile combination, which you can also use in salads, as a garnish for a main dish (try them with pork!) or on a cheese board.

Pickled Apples

Recipe adapted from Chaia Tacos, Washington, D.C.

Yield: 4 cups

Prep Time: 10 minutes, plus 1 hour pickling time

Cook Time: N/A

Total Time: 10 minutes, plus 1 hour pickling time


4 cups green apples, peeled and diced

½ serrano chile, seeded and diced

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

Juice of 3 limes

2 tablespoons kosher salt

1 tablespoon sugar


1. Combine the apples, chile, salt and sugar in a mixing bowl.

2. Add the vinegar and lime juice, and mix to combine.

3. Let stand for about 1 hour before serving or storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
