Zebra Cake

Watch and learn how to make this surprising striped cake

What's black and white and delicious all over?

This surprising zebra cake looks simple enough, like any other standard-issue cake—until you cut into it to reveal vertical black and white stripes inside.

To make the cake, prepare a boxed cake mix (or your favorite from-scratch vanilla cake recipe) according to the package instructions. Pour 2 cups of the batter into a liquid measuring cup and stir in 3 tablespoons of sifted cocoa powder. Add the remaining 2 cups to another measuring cup. Alternating between chocolate and vanilla batter, pour small amounts into a greased 9-inch cake pan creating a bull's-eye pattern, like in the video above.

Bake the cake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes, until it springs back lightly when touched. Hide your secret with whichever frosting you'd like, then slice through it to reveal your animal-inspired dessert.
