Julia Child Recipes: Roast Chicken, Cake & More

Don't worry, there will be cake

No matter how many years go by, we'll always have Julia Child to thank for how her infectious spirit, willingness to learn and pure love of food influenced home cooks everywhere. Remember the culinary icon on August 15th—what would have been her 107th birthday—with one (or all) of these five Julia Child recipes.

① Quiche Lorraine

Start your day with a birthday breakfast of quiche lorraine. With bacon, Gruyère and plenty of eggs, it's like a BEC sandwich in pie form.

② Roast Chicken

If you're going to make one roast chicken, this should be it. In this adaptation of her classic recipe, you'll rub the bird with butter and salt before roasting it in the oven to golden perfection.

③ Reine de Saba Cake

It's not a birthday unless chocolate cake is involved. Watch below to see Child make her Queen of Sheba cake recipe, a "dark beauty made of chocolate and almonds and rum and butter!" which she calls "the best chocolate cake you ever put in your mouth."

④ Boeuf Bourguignon

Fans of the movie Julie & Julia will know just how essential this classic French recipe is in a Julia Child education. Beef cooks in a rich braise of thickened wine, stock and aromatics before joining with mushrooms, onions and carrots for a satisfying stew.

⑤ Buttered Haricots Verts

Nothing is safe from the Julia Child butter treatment—especially not crisp haricots verts. This simple recipe is the ideal side for your roast chicken, or works tossed with greens and tuna for a makeshift niçoise.
