The Best Places For National Ice Cream Day 2016

10 places to celebrate National Ice Cream Day

Sunday really is all about sundaes this weekend: July 17 is National Ice Cream Day. The holiday has been around since 1984 and was signed into effect by Ronald Reagan himself, so you're presidentially obligated to partake. Here are 10 places around the country where you should go to celebrate with a cold one.

Los Angeles and Portland: Salt & Straw is handing out free scoop tokens around town, with the intention that you pay it forward to #sharethelove. Follow them (and the hashtag) on Instagram and Twitter to find out where you can get tokens.

New York: Dominique Ansel is joining forces for the weekend with Alex Stupak of the Empellón restaurants. He's selling ice cream tacos, which are masa waffle cones filled with sweet corn ice cream and roasted corn caramel, at Dominique Ansel Kitchen. It starts at noon every day this weekend and will continue until they're all gone, so consider having an ice cream lunch.

Austin: Celebrations start on the eve of the big day at the Austin Recreation Center with a kid-focused event featuring a 20-foot ice cream sundae. Don't worry, it takes place in an air-conditioned gym.

Washington, D.C.: Head to Union Market for an ice cream social. There will be plenty of treats for sale, as well as samples, giveaways and more.

Chicago: At George's Ice Cream & Sweets, you'll get a voucher for a free cone when you share a photo on social media. With 32 daily flavors to try, this could be the best challenge in town.

New York: Brooklyn Flea is throwing an ice cream bonanza with seven vendors and more than 30 ice cream flavors. Keep your eyes out for the maple waffle doughnut sundae from the joint forces of Underwest and Il Laboratorio del Gelato.

Los Angeles: Smorgasburg L.A. is having an ice cream bonanza of its own, offering West Coast favorites like Smitten Ice Cream, Sweet Rose Creamery and more.

San Francisco: There's also an ice cream festival in SoMa, because why go to one shop when you can choose from (or sample) more than 10 vendors? Get there early (the first 200 to show up get free admission) and head straight for the ice cream beer floats.

Philadelphia: Take your Zipcard to More than Just Ice Cream, and you'll get a free scoop plus topping.

Nationwide: Soft-serve is buy one, get one free at Carvel, so take a friend (or don't).
