Drink Wine At Crystal City Wine Shop | Washington D.C.

Washington Wine Academy schools us

The Washington Wine Academy is putting its knowledge to the test with its first store.

The new Crystal City Wine Shop goes beyond local standards, stocking labels from up-and-coming domestic regions like New Mexico, Arizona and Michigan. Though the shelves are not yet full, the shop's goal is to hold 900 different bottles, including dozens from Maryland and Virginia.

Academy director of education Alex Evans suggests a few selections for any spring occasion:

2010 Weingut Markus Huber Grüner Veltliner ($13 for 750 ml): Tart green fruits, citrus and a trace of peach make this crisp Austrian an ideal pairing for a warm afternoon on the patio.

2008 Dominio de Pingus Psi Ribera del Duero ($40 for 750 ml): A dark, sultry biodynamic Tempranillo, this bottle could age in a cool, dark corner for a few years–or debut now alongside grilled ribs or a plate of smoky brisket.

2011 A to Z Rosé Sangiovese ($15 for 750 ml): This juicy, magenta-colored Oregon rosé is plump with strawberry and cherry. It would tuck nicely into a picnic basket for summer festivals and races, alongside charcuterie and sharp Pecorino.
