The Growler Station introduces plastic bottles for beer
Confession: On the whole, we're committed growler fillers. (It's fresh! It's environmentally friendly! It's in bulk! It's nostalgic!)
But sometimes, those glass jugs are 64 ounces of plain heavy.
The Growler Station in Greenwich Village is offering the perfect solution: two-liter plastic bottles.
Call us childlike, but there is something exhilarating about carrying beer around in a two-liter bottle. With the help of the city's first Pegas NovoTap machine, any of the shop's 24 tap offerings can be dispensed into what we normally think of as a soda-only receptacle. The oxygen is purged from the bottle and then replaced with CO2, which ensures totally foam-free and airtight beer.
And for those times when you want to work your muscles, the Growler Station offers 300-plus bottles along with 32- and 64-ounce cobalt blue and amber glass growlers.
For a crash course in two-liter bottling, try the just-released Widmer Brothers Brewing's Spiced IPA ($13 for two liters). A collaboration between the Portland, Oregon, brewery and a home brewer, this hop-forward beer combines malty Assam black tea, ginger root, cinnamon, clove, star anise, black pepper and cardamom.
So many two-liter roadie and picnic possibilities...
