Sunset Beer Co. brings retail craft beer to Echo Park

Echo Park has been sandwiched by craft beer.

Mohawk Bend marks the beer zone's western edge, and past the arc that Sunset Boulevard cuts through the neighborhood sits the newly opened Sunset Beer Company, a retail shop with a bar-ish space attached.

Manager Alex Macy plans to expand the bottle selection to include 1,000 brews. With so many bottles to choose from, here are three–two of which aren't readily found elsewhere–that we wholeheartedly recommend:

Avril ($9 for 750 ml) Clocking in at 3.5 percent ABV, this nearly near-beer is supremely refreshing and spritzy. The Brasserie Dupont brew, equally floral and citrusy, proves that light beers need not be tasteless.

Maracaibo Especial ($17 for 750 ml) Despite being brewed with cacao, this brown ale leads with a tart orange edge. There's a mild funkiness to it that leans toward sour beer territory–a good direction to move in, by our accounts.

Labyrinth Black Ale ($14.50 for 750 ml) Brewed in Salt Lake City by Uinta Brewing Company, this full-bodied beer is infused with licorice and aged in oak. The rich, chocolaty ale has a complex botanical edge to it, surely the licorice's gift.
