Port City's Porter barrels forward with flavor

Rich, chocolaty and delicious could well describe your leftover Valentine's candy.

But our latest sweet satisfaction comes courtesy of the satiny Porter just released by newcomer Port City Brewing Company.

Northern Virginia's latest craft brewery threw open its doors this month, welcoming guests on weekends only to a spacious tasting room ($5 for a tour and tasting) bubbling over with the company's introductory brews.

The Alexandria-based company's first beers include Optimal Wit, a Belgian white ale that cascades banana and tropical fruit across the palate. By contrast, the hoppy start of Port City's Essential Pale Ale mellows into a clean, easy finish.

But the new Porter–a hearty pour that smells as strong as fresh-brewed coffee–is a throat-coating drink with aromas of dark chocolate. It's robust, malty, and at its best with salty bar snacks.

The brewery is perpetually expanding its offerings: This weekend, Port City founder Bill Butcher plans to add his Monumental IPA to the rotation. It's an intensified IPA layered with extra hops and gripping spice.

There are also plans to begin bottling immediately. In the meantime, get your fix with draft pours at several local bars, including Galaxy Hut, Evening Star Café and The Big Hunt.
