Everyone at Tasting Table is thankful that you let us into your inbox each weekday to share our eating and drinking finds with you. So we're normally hesitant to interrupt your weekend for yet another idea.

But a unique event happening across the country today, Small Business Saturday, has inspired me to send this note as you start the holiday shopping season.

Small Business Saturday is a new one-day celebration of the stores and shops that provide a backbone to our cities. As a small-business owner myself–in an industry made interesting by independent restaurants and epicurean establishments–I'm especially proud to implore you to spend big with small businesses today.

The request is simple: Visit http://facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday now and click the "Like" button. American Express customers can register their cards to receive a personal credit for participating (details are available on the Facebook page). Then, go out into your neighborhood and spend your holiday dollars at your favorite small businesses.

Like the 22 employees of Tasting Table, those businesses will be especially grateful for your business–today and all year long.
