Select Costco warehouses in California have dropped the latest hot ticket item: the Japanese Crepe Roll Cake. The confection, created by the Japanese brand Yamato Desserts, boasts 12 layers of soft, golden crepes layered with a lightly sweetened cream, all rolled into a log. Made in Japan, the cake features cream from Hokkaido, a region in northern Japan renowned for its dairy.

Crepe cakes are a dainty dessert originating in France that became popular in Japan and around the world. Also known as mille crepe cakes, they are typically made by stacking crepes with cream into a tower and are often flavored with chocolate, vanilla, or matcha.

The roll cake can be found in the frozen section and should be defrosted in the refrigerator for 6 hours before being sliced and served (so no, you can't just gobble it up in the car). The cake has some heft to it — at 2.2 pounds, and should serve approximately 12 people. As of October 2026, it costs between around $18 and $19. But so far, the only reported sightings are at locations in California, including Fountain Valley, and Pleasanton.

What reviewers say about this crepe roll cake

Perhaps the most meaningful stamp of approval for an Asian dessert is "not too sweet" and most reviewers on Reddit are saying that the cake reaches that high praise. One reviewer commented, "If Asian sweet is 1 and American sweet is 10, this lands at 4 for me. The texture is right, but the whipped cream is slightly sweeter than what I'm used to in Japanese cake." The same commenter, who posted a review to Instagram, adds that, "The crepe itself is super nice, soft, and tender. It's almost like a chiffon cake but made into a really, really thin layer."

While most reviews are positive, some people have complained that the dessert is a bit plain for their liking, and others say that the price is too steep. Shoppers do lament not having the item in their local Costco, as it just seems to have landed in California at the time of writing. If the Yamato crepe roll cake isn't stocked at a warehouse near you, you could try making a crepe cake for yourself. But make sure not to rush the baking process, as not resting the crepe batter before starting is one of the most common crepe cake mistakes.
