If you're following a gluten-free diet, you know the struggle to find acceptable sandwich bread is endless. We've ranked gluten-free bread, but even the best gluten-free bread doesn't quite compare to regular bread. Most pre-sliced gluten-free bread is dry and crumbly, inedible unless toasted, and/or about a third the size of a regular piece of bread (while, of course, being double or triple the price). But there is one brand of gluten-free bread that customers say comes close to regular bread, which is just about the highest compliment, and that is Little Northern Bakehouse's Whole Grain Wide Slice Bread.

This loaf is made from a diverse blend of gluten-free flours, including brown rice, teff, millet, and quinoa, along with tapioca, potato, and corn starch. It is a hearty whole grain loaf that customers say rivals the real thing. "Pleased with the taste and texture of this bread," one Amazon reviewer wrote. "It's the closest to 'regular' wheat bread. Makes great toast and decent sandwiches. I'll buy this again."

Little Northern Bakehouse's Whole Grain Wide Slice Bread blows other gluten-free options out of the water

Little Northern Bakehouse's bread gets high marks for its texture, which is difficult to get right with gluten-free bread. Gluten gives bread its stretchy nature; without gluten, it can be hard to replicate that springy dough and ultimately chewy slice of bread. But this bread comes close. "This bread doesn't crumble to pieces like a lot of gluten free breads," one customer wrote.

Because the specialty flours used to make gluten-free bread are often more expensive and harder to come by than wheat flour, and because it's harder to get an airy, spongy texture in bread that doesn't have gluten, gluten-free products end up costing more than their counterparts. It's hard out there for gluten-free folks! But Little Northern Bakehouse's Whole Grain advertises its wide slices, and a decent-sized slice of bread is a hard thing to pass up. "This bread is delicious," one happy customer wrote. "The loaf has more slices than others and is the best size for sandwiches and French toast."

Sure, you can make something like this gluten-free buckwheat bread at home and try to make the slices as big as you want. But those who avoid gluten also deserve the convenience of pre-sliced bread that can actually fit the ingredients for a regular-sized turkey sandwich. Is that so much to ask? Little Northern Bakehouse doesn't think so.
