Ina Garten's Had The Same Breakfast Every Day For 10 Years

Beloved chef and author Ina Garten might be known for her simple and elegant approach to cooking. But just because she is a queen of home entertaining doesn't mean she loves to take the time and effort to make an elaborate breakfast for herself. Though the Barefoot Contessa has plenty of recipes to make the most extravagant of brunches, that is a far cry from her daily reality — and a long-standing habit at that.

While it might surprise many to learn that Garten actually relies on the microwave to make her breakfast, her plain and simple choice could also raise eyebrows. As it turns out, Garten has practiced the same breakfast routine for the past 10 years. When talking to Bon Appétit, Garten said, "I would never make a meal just for myself — I wouldn't even begin to think about it! Avocado toast with a fried egg is about the most extravagant thing I'd make." But even that is more involved than what she actually eats every morning.

This is why oatmeal makes such a good choice

Apparently, she wakes up and enjoys McCann's quick-cooking Irish oatmeal. Of course, she brews up and enjoys a cup of coffee alongside her favorite start to the day. But it was in 2017 that Garten told Bon Appétit the simple meal continues to be her go-to breakfast every single day. So what makes Ina Garten's breakfast choice so special?

For starters, oatmeal is a great choice for breakfast because it's packed with fiber, protein, and other essential nutrients. It's also low in calories and can help keep you full and satisfied throughout the morning — no matter how busy your schedule is.

In addition, Irish oatmeal, also known as steel-cut oats, is a less processed form of oats that retains more of its nutritional value. And quick-cooking Irish oatmeal cooks up in just a few minutes. As for the salt, Garten has said that she likes to add plenty of it to enhance the flavor. The Barefoot Contessa explained this prevents it from tasting like "wallpaper paste."

So next time you're in need of a quick and healthy breakfast option, take a cue from the Barefoot Contessa and give Irish oatmeal a try.
