Lobster Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Seafood lovers, you'll find bliss in this gourmet dish by recipe developer Jennine Bryant. As if mashed potatoes weren't decadent enough, this lobster mashed potatoes recipe takes things to a new level. If you're not privy to fish, you may yet enjoy diversifying your palette. "Lobster has a beautifully rich and sweet flavour, it is quite tender and meaty, and not so fishy," Bryant raves.

Whether you're on the coast or midland, crustaceans are delicacies on any terrain. The nutrients in lobster meat may actually surprise you. Healthline gives a full view from the nutrition perspective, stating that lobster is a lean protein, with minor amounts of fats and carbs (unless you add butter). However, it is abundant in three macro-minerals: copper, selenium, zinc, and the B12 vitamin. Enjoying this delicacy adds an ounce of exquisite taste to any menu. Gourmet lobster mashed potatoes will make the perfect meal for two. Our developer suggests, "Lobster mashed potatoes would be a great date night dish, or a lovely accompaniment to a seafood themed dinner party." You choose the time and date, and we'll give the directions. Here goes!

Gather the ingredients for lobster mashed potatoes

Beginning this recipe requires a whole cooked lobster, 1 ½ pounds of potatoes, and 3 tablespoons of butter (divided). To make the creamy potatoes you'll need ¼ cup of double cream, 1 clove of garlic, 1 tablespoon of fresh tarragon (or fennel), a pinch of salt and pepper, and ½ tablespoon of fresh chives.

Boil the lobster and potatoes

Chefs, roll up your sleeves! Let's dive right in. To start you'll need to heat up a large saucepan of water on the stove. While it comes to a boil, carefully remove the lobster meat from each part of the shell. Setting the shell aside, slice the meat into bite-sized sections. Place the chopped meat into a bowl for later steps. Now is a good time to chop and peel your potatoes as well. Once the water reaches a boiling point, sprinkle in a bit of salt. Subsequently, add the peeled and chopped potatoes, and leftover lobster shell pieces. Boil the potatoes for 15 minutes until they're soft.

So, why boil the shells? Bryant commented, "There is a lot of flavour within the shell of a lobster, so, in the same way that chicken bones can be boiled to make a tasty broth, lobster shell can be boiled to make a lobster-flavoured broth. The potatoes absorb some of this flavour as they cook, adding to the overall flavour of the dish."

Brown the lobster meat

With a separate eye on the stove, heat a frying pan on low. Drop 1 tablespoon of butter into the pan. Crush the garlic clove lightly with the back of a knife, incorporating that as well. Add the chopped lobster meat to the pan to warm, stirring regularly. After for four to five minutes, remove the lobster skillet from the heat. "Warming the lobster in a pan with butter and then drizzling it over the top infuses the potatoes with the delicious flavour of lobster too," Bryant says.

Are you thinking of ways to serve this? We have an idea. "It's definitely not an every day sort of dish, the lobster adds a bit of decadence," our developer told us, "so it would be perfect for slightly more special occasions where you don't want to spend hours in the kitchen."

Mash the potatoes

As the potatoes come to a finish, drain the water and discard the lobster shells. Return the cooked potatoes back into the pot. With a potato masher, mash the potatoes until the texture is smooth. Now you may add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the dollop of cream along with the tarragon. Lightly dust the potatoes with salt and pepper to taste. Mix everything until all is well-combined.

Add the lobster to the mashed potatoes and serve

For the final step, transfer the buttery lobster into the mashed potatoes. Excess juices from the frying pan will multiply flavor here, so you can fold that in. Garnish these gourmet Lobster Mashed Potatoes with fresh chives and serve to your delight.

The decadence of Lobster Mashed Potatoes would make a phenomenal entree or partner with more protein. "I think this would go beautifully with some fresh fried or baked fish, and some samphire, with spring greens or kale on the side," Bryant suggests. For optimal quality, enjoy this fresh. Should there be leftovers, they can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
