  • John is a Certified Level 1 Sommelier in the Court of Master Sommeliers.
  • James Patterson hired him for his first writing job — writing about Ragu, Nestea, and breakfast cereals.
  • He has named several food products and companies, including Wholly Guacamole and Fresherized Foods

John grew up in Iran, Norway, Indonesia, and other parts of the Middle East, not realizing how this fact schooled his palate in the ways of adventurous eating until he moved back stateside and couldn't find decent labneh. In his capacity as a writer for a food-centric advertising agency, he shepherded brands as diverse as Dr. Kracker, Smokey Denmark Sausages, Promised Land Dairy, Barilla, and Carbonnel Olive Oils to successful regional and national launches. As the Wine and Cheese writer for Whole Foods Global, John sampled and wrote about some of the best wines and wine pairings in the market (tough gig!). His years in the world of marketing and launching food and wine brands have fired his passion for discovering that new flavor, intriguing texture, or soon-to-be-hot varietal. Getting to share his gastro-viticultural knowledge with Tasting Table readers makes him very happy indeed. Other key ingredients in his happiness recipe are cardamom, crispy Brussels sprouts and Manchego.

John has a bachelor's degree in the creative sequence at the University of Texas at Austin.
