40% Of People Agree On Their Favorite Way To Eat Avocado

American botanist David Fairchild once famously raved, "The avocado is a food without rival among the fruits, the veritable fruit of paradise," — and he might have been onto something. According to data analytics platform Statista, U.S. consumers were eating roughly 8 pounds of avocados per person in 2018, which was up from 2 pounds pr person in 2001. Considering Fairchild lived from 1869 to 1954, avocados have been a fan fave for a while now. And not only are they a super versatile ingredient in the kitchen, they're also packed with an impressive array of health benefits. Just one 7-ounce avocado boasts 4 grams of protein, 14 grams of fiber, and 21% of the daily recommended value for potassium (per Healthline). Julia Zumpano, RD, LD, of the Cleveland Clinic even calls avocados an "all-ages treat."

It seems like the question, then, isn't whether or not most folks enjoy eating avocados — it's how they enjoy eating avocados. Tasting Table asked 615 avo-fans about their favorite way to chow down on the creamy, dreamy, green fruit to find out, once and for all, what is the most popular way to eat avocados. Did your fave make the list?

Guacamole tops the avo-charts

Sippers, rise up: Over 8% of voters say they like their avocados best when blended in a smoothie. But, judging by our survey, the avo-arena is a voracious champion of the plainer of gastronomy, too. More than 13% of voters say they prefer simply eating an avocado by itself. Can't beat the classics. Next, 17.07% of voters like their avocados sliced up in a salad. (Considering the protein content of small, powerful avocados, they make a good meat substitute for vegetarian salad fans). Perhaps unsurprisingly, avocado toast – the inimitable fashion foodie dish The Fiscal Times calls "the breakfast of choice among hipsters worldwide" — raked in an impressive 20.33% of the vote. But, one avocado-starring dish still beat avocado toast out for the number one spot.

We asked Tasting Table readers, and they answered: With a whopping 40.65% of the vote, guacamole is the winner. From Cinco de Mayo to summer picnics and October tailgates, guac is truly a dip for all seasons. But, since nearly half of voters said guacamole is their favorite way to eat avocado, consider switching it up by giving avocado salsa a try. (It might even become your new favorite avo-vehicle).
