And for those struggling to drink more water throughout the day, sports drinks can be a sweet incentive to take extra sips. Yet in grocery aisles around the world, thirsty consumers are faced with a variety of colorful beverages to choose from. 

Gatorade and Powerade are some of the most prevalent commercial sports drinks brands marketed worldwide. You can find these two brands in practically every gas station, grocery store, and vending machine on the planet. You may think these two products impact performance in different ways, but that is not the case. According to Healthline, there is no conclusive evidence supporting the idea that one drink is better than the other at strengthening performance. But what about nutritional content? Are these two drinks the same?

A matter of preference

From a nutritional standpoint, there is minimal difference between the two electrolyte-infused beverages. Gatorade varieties are sweetened with dextrose, while Powerade contains high fructose corn syrup which can result in a slightly sweeter taste. The actual amount of added sugars in each drink are comparable, though Gatorade contains slightly more calories and sodium. Powerade boasts more micronutrients than Gatorade, with magnesium, niacin, and vitamins in each serving. 

The basic draw of sports drinks is their ability to provide the body with electrolytes, substances that help the body regulate chemical reactions and maintain a balance of bodily fluids (per Cleveland Clinic). For example, sodium and magnesium help the body function smoothly. While Gatorade and Powerade both provide electrolytes, the high sugar content of both drinks can be unhealthy. Regardless of your choice of flavor or brand, choose the drink that will help you stay hydrated as you go about your activities.
