How An NYC Bar Is Keeping The Choco Taco's Spirit Alive

Since the 1980s, according to CNN, the Choco Taco has been a beloved sweet treat of many. Until recently, it was a favorite of many at ice cream trucks, retailers, and select Taco Bells around the country, not only for its taste but its novel appearance. Much to the dismay of many fans, however, Klondike announced in July 2022 that it would be discontinuing the taco-shaped ice cream for good.

Those who want to enjoy a Choco Taco now will unfortunately have no choice but to make a homemade version of it, or settle for chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream in a regular-shaped cone. Nothing will ever beat the original, but one New York City bar has found a particularly creative way to enjoy the newly-discontinued product, Time Out reports. At Amy Fontaine's in midtown Manhattan, you can indulge in a Choco Taco in the form of a martini — or rather, a Tacotini, the invention of Cody Goldstein, the mixologist behind Brooklyn-based hospitality group Muddling Memories.

What's in a Tacotini?

When you order a Tacotini from Amy Fontaine's, you're actually getting better quality ingredients than you would in an actual Choco Taco. As anyone who's ever eaten one already knows, a Choco Taco consists of fudge-swirled vanilla ice cream, nuts, chocolate, and a taco-shaped waffle cone. But what most may not know, as Eater shares, is that the "chocolate" isn't actually pure chocolate but rather a combination of low-grade cocoa powder and cocoa butter mixed with a handful of other additives.

As for the Tacotini, the chocolate is actually the real deal. According to the menu on the Amy Fontaine's website, the Choco-Taco-inspired cocktail also contains Cazadores Blanco Tequila, Averna, waffle cone syrup (made with vanilla, cinnamon, and almond, per Time Out), and crushed peanuts. It looks just like a Choco Taco in a glass, and is said to taste like it too.

If you want to try the Tacotinin for yourself, just make sure to make it to Amy Fontaine's before the end of August, as it's only available for a limited time.
