Transform Lemonade Into A Fun Treat For Summer With One Simple Addition

There is nothing better on a hot summer day than a cool, refreshing glass of lemonade. The tangy sweet-and-sour drink is the perfect cooldown treat after a long day of fun in the sun.

While lemonade in some variety has been around for more than 1,000 years, HowStuffWorks states that lemonade first debuted in Paris in 1630. It was there that the sparkling water and lemon juice that was sweetened with honey was sold to the crowds. Its popularity only grew from there and over the years.

Lemonade was actually advertised as an alternative to alcohol during the temperance movement. President Rutherford B. Hayes' wife, Lucy, was a strong supporter of this movement, and even served lemonade instead of alcohol to White House visitors (via HowStuffWorks). There have been multiple variations created, including modern hard lemonades for adult consumers. Although basic lemonade is always a great choice, adding a twist can make for a delicious treat.

Upgrade your lemonade

Although that signature lemon flavor is an iconic summer treat, upgrading your drink with another fruit can make for a fun twist. You can add one ingredient, like mint or watermelon, if you want to make a simple change, or try an entirely new recipe for a mouthwatering mix.

Basil can be a refreshing addition by adding a minty hint to the sweetness of the lemonade. Add some color or texture to your drink with these recipes for slushy, smoked, spiked, cherry, or even tomato (yes, it is a fruit!) lemonade. If you are worried about the bitterness of the tomato in your beverage, you can also add some extra sugar to sweeten things up.

Whether you choose to stick with a tried and true recipe or upgrade your lemonade this summer, one thing is for sure: This tangy drink is a classic to beat the heat.
