Ben & Jerry's New Sunny Honey Home Flavor Helps UK Refugees Get A Fresh Start

Those who like a little philanthropy with their ice cream have a new flavor to enjoy from Ben & Jerry's. The Ben & Jerry's ice cream churners teamed up with The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN) to create the new flavor Sunny Honey Home. This flavor, besides being delicious, was created to raise proceeds for the business ventures of refugees in the United Kingdom. According to TERN, supporting the start-up dreams of refugees is essential to aiding their successful integration into their new homes and adopted countries, as well as securing a promising future for the next generation.

The new flavor is a sweet homage to the classic dessert flavors found in the refugees' homelands, particularly from the countries of Afghanistan, Syria, and Morocco. The resulting taste is a blend of bright lemony ice cream, rich swirls of honey caramel, and a crunchy element from crushed lemon cookies. A nostalgic combination of North African and Middle Eastern flavors, it's a unique addition to the traditional Ben & Jerry's lineup.

A sweet ice cream with a sweeter cause

But this flavor isn't just created for refugees, it was also created by them. Eight entrepreneur graduates from the UP Collective, which is an organization that provides business training to refugees, were part of the team that dreamed up this sensational flavor. Founded by Ben & Jerry's and TERN in 2017, the UP Collective (previously known as the Ice Academy) has already helped 362 refugee entrepreneurs in France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom learn the ins and outs of running a business from financing to permits. UP Collective participants are also introduced to a supportive network of business insiders who can help open doors to various opportunities.

The Sunny Honey Home flavor will be available at Co-Op, a British-based grocery store, by June 19th for the suggested price of £5.50 per pint (about $7). The ice cream brand has also hinted at plans for other UP Collective-designed flavors in the future. Though the flavor is currently only available in the United Kingdom, one can only hope that some of these ingenious flavors will cross the pond in the near future.
