Wendy's Debuts New Cheesy Chicken Sandwich And Garlic Fries
In the ongoing competition for the best-selling chicken sandwich at a quick service restaurant, Wendy's has upped the ante with its new chicken sandwich.
What has been nicknamed the "chicken sandwich wars" began in the second half of 2019 when Popeyes introduced a fried chicken sandwich that went viral, according to Restaurant Business. Once word got out about the sandwich, it quickly sold out at different Popeyes locations and is believed to have led to the restaurant's 38% increase in sales during the fourth quarter of 2019. Since then, other restaurants have added new chicken sandwiches to their menus in an effort to gain dominance, including KFC, Chick-fil-A, and Shake Shack.
Wendy's announced its newest chicken sandwich on November 17 in a press release, just days after Popeyes unveiled its new blackened chicken sandwich. The addition comes will join several existing chicken sandwiches on its menu, including the Pretzel Bacon Pub Chicken, Classic Chicken Sandwich, Asiago Ranch Club, and Crispy Chicken BLT.
When it came to making the new Wendy's chicken sandwich, John Li, vice president of Culinary Innovation for Wendy's, said the company has found success in reinventing customer favorites by giving them a new variation, thus, its new Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich.
The new sandwich and fries won't be around forever
In a press release, Wendy's is touting its new Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich as the perfect comfort food for a chilly day. It's described as a lightly breaded crispy chicken breast served on a garlic knot bun with melted fried mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce, and aged Asiago cheese. However, for those who prefer chicken that hasn't been breaded, a grilled option will also be available. Or, customers can also opt for a classic or spicy chicken filet.
The new Italian-influenced chicken sandwich will be found on Wendy's Made to Crave lineup. This array of flavorful favorites already includes the Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger, Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger, and Big Bacon Classic Cheeseburger, according to the announcement. In addition to the Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich, Wendy's is also introducing an Italian Mozzarella Cheeseburger which swaps chicken for a beef patty, as well as Garlic Fries, made from natural-cut fries and tossed in a garlic herb sauce.
