Now Is Your Chance To Own The World's Largest Bottle Of Scotch

Forget your home bar. You'll need an entire room to display this bottle of Scotch whisky. At 5 feet, 11 inches tall, according to Food & Wine, it may well be taller than the person who wins it at auction later this month. It will almost certainly have more girth. The massive 311-liter bottle contains the equivalent of 444 normal-sized bottles and is filled with 32-year-old Scotch from The Macallan. Guinness World Records has certified this one-of-a-kind item, dubbed The Intrepid, as "The World's Largest Bottle of Scotch. "

The Intrepid is the work of three companies — Rosewin Holdings, Fah Mai Holdings Group, and Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky — who jointly filled the mega bottle last September in a bid to make Scotch whisky history, Food & Wine reports. The Intrepid is set to be auctioned off on May 25 by Lyon & Turnbull, an auction house based in Edinburgh, Scotland, and its current owners are optimistic that it may be able to set one more record after the bidding closes: that of the most expensive bottle of Scotch whisky ever sold.

Another record may fall when the bottle goes to auction

It certainly stands to reason that The Intrepid could fetch a record-breaking price. According to Food & Wine, a normal bottle of 30-year-old The Macallan sells for about $3,750. The Intrepid features even older Scotch whisky from the celebrated distiller, not to mention approximately 444 times more of it. Simple math suggests a price of over $1.6 million, which would certainly put The Intrepid within range of the current record holding bottle (which sold for a little over $1.8 million), without even projecting additional value for its uniqueness factor.

The man leading the auction for Lyon & Turnbull, Colin Fraser, said as much in its announcement. "I'm sure there will be significant global interest in the auction of The Intrepid. Bidders will have the chance to buy a piece of Scotch whisky history," Fraser said (via Food & Wine). "They will become the owners of an exclusive 32-year-old single-malt Scotch from what is widely regarded as one of the world's best distilleries, The Macallan."

The Intrepid's over-sized label honors the achievements of 11 record-breaking explorers, Whiskey Raiders notes, and should the bottle sail past the $1.6 million projection to make even more history, 25% of the amount above that threshold will be donated to the Marie Curie charity, which provides support to those suffering from terminal illness. The project is also supporting the explorers' chosen charities, per Lyon & Turnbull.
