This Surprising Spice Will Take Your Scrambled Eggs Up A Notch

Nothing turns a good morning into a great morning quite like a home-cooked breakfast — even if it's a dish as simple as scrambled eggs. Scrambled eggs in their most basic form, with just butter and some salt, are delicious as can be. But if you have a few extra minutes to spare, they're worth jazzing up with a few extra ingredients. Most people add shredded cheese, a sprinkle of black pepper, or even a few chives for garnishing, but there's one seasoning that packs even more flavor: garlic powder.

According to Spoon University, a teaspoon of garlic powder does wonders in taking scrambled eggs to the next level. Scrambled eggs that are loaded with all kinds of herbs, spices, and vegetables are borderline on becoming an omelet, but with the sole addition of garlic powder, you can still enjoy the simplicity of scrambled eggs, but in an elevated way. For best results, Spoon University recommends adding a teaspoon for every serving, when the eggs are already in the pan and you see they've just started to cook.

Why do garlic and eggs go well together?

Whether it be peanut butter and chocolate, or cheese and wine, there are certain flavors that naturally complement each other. For garlic, there's a number of foods that probably come to mind. Garlic and eggs go together just as well as garlic and butter, garlic and onion, garlic and lemon juice — the list goes on. The reason for garlic's extensive range of complementary flavors is actually due to food science and the chemical composition of garlic (via Serious Eats). Garlic is part of the allium family, along with scallions and onions. Alliums contain pungent chemical compounds "that attack our taste buds and olfactory receptors" making our senses light up, Serious Eats explains. This means that while garlic has its own unique flavor, it also helps to boost the other flavors in a dish.  In short, garlic powder enhances the flavor of eggs because of science. And you can't argue with that, especially if the payoff is really good scrambled eggs.
