Best Tacos In NYC: Los Tacos No. 1, Tacombi

All within the small confines of Manhattan

Although the West Coast has long claimed authentic Mexican cuisine as their culinary claim to fame, over the last few years, New York has ramped up its taco game. From fresh fish tacos to all things al pastor, here are five of the best places to get your taco fix in Manhattan.

El Mitote

Located in the heart of the Upper West Side, this Mexican antojeria serves up some of the city's best tacos—and people-watching opportunities, thanks to abundant sidewalk seating. Grab a salty margarita or refreshing michelada to sip alongside your order (try the carnitas or black bean tacos) and don't forget to save room for guac. Come early, as tables, both inside and out, fill up quickly.

Los Tacos No. 1

The Chelsea Market gem is known for their homemade tortillas, available in both flour or corn, and, fillings range from well-seasoned spit-roast pork (adobada) to grilled cactus (nopal). On days where the line is crazy, head to Los Mariscos around the corner; it's owned by the same team.

Empellon al Pastor

This East Village taqueria has gained a ton of traction over the last few years thanks to its marinated pork shoulder, beer-braised beef tongue and duck confit tacos. The well-executed menu is best consumed with one of the many agave-based drinks. For late nights out on St. Mark's that require some sustenance, this is your spot.

Tacombi first got its start in Mexico in 2005, when the two founders purchased a VW Kombi in Mexico City and drove it across the Yucatan, opening two locations in Playa del Carmen that served tacos and aguas frescas to thirsty tourists. Tacombi now has multiple outputs across the city, with its first location on Elizabeth Street opening back in 2008.

La Esquina

Now with three locations across the city, La Esquina has become a staple for taco classics, including pescado, camaron, hongos and carnitas. All of the side staples are available (guacamole, chips, rice & beans), and it's all best washed down with an authentic Mexican horchata.
