McDonald's Women's Day

60 percent of the chain's franchises are operated by women

After a single McDonald's location in Lynwood, California, turned its physical sign upside down, the mega chain has decided to also flip the rest of its trademark golden arches (well, the digital ones at least) to resemble the letter W in celebration of International Women's Day.

CNBC reports the logo has been changed on all of the company's social media channels, with special W arches gear, including crew shirts, packaging and bag stuffers, having been shipped out to 100 locations.

"For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women's Day in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants," chief diversity officer for the company Wendy Lewis says. (According to Inc., 60 percent of McDonald's U.S. restaurants are managed by women.)

McDonald's isn't the only fast-food chain celebrating women today though. In Malaysia, KFC has replaced the face of founder Colonel Sanders with his wife, Claudia. (The website cites her as the 12th ingredient to the brand's famous 11-herb-and-spice blend.) Starbucks is also showing its support via a partnership with the Malala Fund to help support 250,000 women and their families in their educational and economic goals.
