How To Carve Cauliflower

Slicing up a massive vegetable head is easier than you think

Sometimes you bring home a vegetable and it's pretty clear how to handle it. Like carrots, for instance; you definitely know how to slice carrots.

But cauliflower is an entirely different beast. There are leaves everywhere, and when in season, one head can weigh as much as a newborn baby. Do you just hack off the florets and call it a day?

We've got you covered. Carving a head of cauliflower is simple with these few key steps. Here's how to do it:

First, remove the leaves at their roots, so you can see what you're doing. Cut off the stub so the cauliflower can sit flat and safely upright. Cut the head directly down the middle. Remove the core from each half. Then, simply break or slice apart the florets from each other, since they are no longer held together by the core. Lastly, make sure all the florets are of equal size, cutting them if needed. This way they will cook evenly.
