Salt & Straw's August 'Summer Picnic' Series Returning With New Flavors
Who doesn't love a good ice cream cone – or cup — during the summer? And if you're on the West coast (or in Florida) one of the most beloved places to get that summertime scoop is craft ice cream chain Salt & Straw. If you're already a fan and are ready for some new flavors, we've got good news: The brand is bringing back its August "Summer Picnic" series with five seasonal flavors, including two new varieties to try, beginning Friday, August 4.
The summer ice cream picnic series really takes the theme to heart, including the following flavors: Chocolate Potato Salad, Cinnamon & Honey Fried Chicken, Pink Rosé & Watermelon Sorbet, Baked Brie & Fig Cheesecake, and Sour Cherry Pie. As it turns out, that five-course meal consists mostly of dessert flavors — not that we're complaining. And there's another surprise in store at the shops in August as well.
What to expect from the new flavors
The new Salt & Straw flavors joining the lineup are Chocolate Potato Salad and Sour Cherry Pie. The former consists of spiced mustard ice cream with paprika, celery seed, and dill mixed in, as well as potato chip cookies, and topped with chocolate fudge. The Sour Cherry Pie is a salted vanilla ice cream with cherry pie pieces mixed in alongside hand-candied cherries, a splash of amaretto, and an almond flour crust.
Meanwhile, three familiar flavors return. The Pink Rosé & Watermelon Sorbet, which is vegan, is made with, well, watermelon and rosé (from Sokol Blosser Winery in Dundee Hill, Oregon) and is drizzled with house-made raspberry rosé jam. The Baked Brie & Fig Cheesecake consists of a salted sweet cream ice cream base and contains cheesecake (house-made with Cowgirl Creamery's Mt. Tam triple cream brie) mixed with a candied Ritz cracker crust and fig jam. Finally, the Cinnamon & Honey Fried Chicken is vanilla ice cream with pieces of croissants that have been deep fried in the fat of Ezell's Famous Chicken alongside cinnamon, honey, and secret spices (which give it a Cajun-style heat).
On top of all of that, Salt & Straw is offering Pup Cups, an ice cream treat for dogs, on August 26, which is National Dog Day. The flavor is Apple & Carrots with Sweet Potato Ribbons, which features coconut ice cream and pieces of apples, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
