Salt & Straw's Limited Time Ice Cream Is Inspired By Your Favorite Cereals
Nostalgia is currently big business for the food industry. From companies like General Mills returning to original retro recipes to the resurgence in popularity for millennial snacks like Dunkaroos (thanks in part to, uh, Kim Kardashian), many culinary brands have realized that we're willing to pay to experience the flavors we once adored as children. One nostalgic treat, in particular, is dominating the dessert world: cereal.
This trend is especially evident in the realm of ice cream. From Christina Tosi's legendary cereal milk ice cream to Burger King's Froot Loops Milkshake, ice cream and cereal offer a double dose of nostalgia: first for the simple breakfasts of days past, and for those special trips to the ice cream parlor. Now, Salt & Straw, the company that makes ice cream for the curious, is offering its own limited edition line of cereal-themed ice creams.
See which snack cereal favorites are being offered in one of their five new pints.
Bowled over for cereal ice cream
Five cereals made the cut for Salt & Straw's limited edition pints. First up is a Lucky Charms-inspired Pots of Gold and Rainbows. A cereal milk base is made from just the sugar-frosted cereal, while the technicolor marshmallows are held back to be folded into the cereal milk-flavored ice cream.
Other classic brands like Cornflakes, Raisin Bran, Reese's Puffs, and OffLimits Zombie Pandan Cereal also got their sweet twists. The flavors are complexly layered, opting for caramel cornflake cookies crumbled into a marionberry jam-ribboned ice cream base or raisin shortbread- and bran butter-punctuated rum custard ice cream. Even the peanut butter and cocoa puff-inspired ice cream goes above and beyond, with chocolate-dipped brownie bites sharing space with peanut butter swirls, chocolate ice cream, and sweet cream ice cream.
The most exotic entry in the mix is the OffLimits Zombie with Coconut and Pandan. A cult cereal among Filipinos and Americans, OffLimits Zombie Cereal is all about celebrating the flavor of pandan. Pandan is a plant with a coconut-tinged vanilla taste popular in Asian desserts and plays a starring role in this Salt & Straw pint. Balanced out by a coconut ice cream base and a neon-green pandan swirl, the ice cream may inspire you to go straight to the cereal source, to enjoying it for breakfast as well as dessert.
Fingers crossed that other favorite cereals, like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Froot Loops, will soon get the stellar Salt & Straw ice cream treatment.
