How Much Sugar Is Actually In Sweet Vermouth?

Sweet treats are delicious. Brownies, cookies, cakes, and candy, are just some of the desserts that give us the sugar high we crave when our taste buds need a little glucose. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, when it comes to sugar in the diets of American adults, we eat a lot. On any given day of the week, the organization says we eat 77 grams of sugar which comes out to about 60 pounds a year. Where do most of those sugars come from? Believe it or not, it's not candy.

Surprisingly, 47% of all added sugar comes from what we drink, with soft drinks and juice leading the way. But have you ever thought about the amount of sugar in some of the cocktails you drink? Dental Nursing shares that there is a lot of sugar in some of our favorite adult beverages. A Moscow Mule contains 23 grams of sugar, making it almost 77% sugar, while an Espresso Martini has 25 grams of sweetness or 83% sugar. It's a lot, and if you don't stop at one drink, those grams of sweetness can quickly add up. But what about that sweet vermouth that goes into your martini? How much sugar does it contain?

It's more than dry vermouth

What exactly is sweet vermouth? According to Vine Pair, it is a fragrant wine to which a distilled spirit has been added. The outlet explains that added spirit is usually brandy that has been jazzed up with aromatics, botanicals, and sweeteners. Sweet vermouth can be either white or red, but when it comes to sugar, sweet vermouth definitely has more sugar than dry. Leith Shenstone, who is an aperitif importer revealed to Flaviar, "The sugar content is typically around 200 grams of sugar per liter or more."

What's the difference between the amount of sugar in sweet vermouth compared to that in dry vermouth? Mixly shares that dry vermouth will generally only be about 3% sugar whereas sweet vermouth can be anywhere between 10% and 15% sugar. However, the site points out that despite the greater amount of sugar in sweet vermouth, the calories do not differ that much from the dry. How much sugar is too much? The American Heart Association says men shouldn't have more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day, while women need to keep it down to six teaspoons or less.
