Dessert Lovers Tell Tasting Table Which Southern Delight They Could Eat Every Day - Exclusive Survey

If you have a sweet tooth, there happen to be thousands upon thousands of desserts out there — from all around the world — with which you can satisfy it. Among the broad categories of cake, pie, cookies, mousses, flans, puddings, and curds, you're sure to find something delectable to (at least temporarily) assuage the sugar cravings.

Cooks and bakers all over the globe have their own vast dessert traditions, from German Christmas cookie bonanzas to Mexican pan dulce to those Chinese glutinous rice balls stuffed with sweet fillings such as sesame and red bean paste. The good news, if you live in the United States, is that you don't have to travel far afield to sample some of the best of the best of the dessert world. Right here, in the American South, there's a rich — pun intended — tradition of sweet, sticky, fluffy, and all-around delicious array of cakes, pies, and more. We asked Tasting Table readers which of these iconic Southern desserts they could eat every day, and the answer might surprise you.

Readers can't get enough peach cobbler

If you've ever tucked yourself into a booth at a Southern diner or bakery, you've experienced selecting from a vast range of dessert delights, from pecan, mud, and sweet potato pies to peach cobbler to banana pudding to hummingbird cake. In a poll, we asked 588 Tasting Table readers to choose from that list of all-stars — and a full 27% selected warm, comforting peach cobbler.

The "winner" of this poll is a classic combination of soft, sweet spiced fruit that's topped or "cobbled" with a biscuit-like dough, resulting in a fragrant casserole of fruit that cries out for cool vanilla ice cream. In second place, gaining the vote of 25% of poll participants, was banana pudding, that trifle-like dish of crunchy vanilla wafer cookies, creamy vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, and plenty of whipped cream. 

Up next, with 24% of the vote was pecan pie, that indulgent option of crunchy pecans suspended in a gooey, jiggly custard thick with plenty of sweetener. 10% of voters would like to chow down on soft sweet potato pie daily, while a select few hummingbird cake aficionados — 13 in all — named the moist layer cake packed with canned pineapple, mashed bananas, and chopped pecans their choice for a daily indulgence.
