How Hollywood's The Cat & Fiddle Restaurant Is Honoring The Queen

Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday, September 8 at the age of 96. After serving for seven decades, she was an icon of British culture and oversaw many changes in world leadership and social change, according to BBC News. Her passing marked the end of the second Elizabethan era.

The Cat & Fiddle opened in Hollywood in 1982, and has been serving up traditional, pub-style British food ever since. The family-owned restaurant satisfies cravings for food from across the pond, like fish & chips, beef wellington, and bangers & mash. The restaurant also offers craft and imported beers, wines, and cocktails.

In Britain, afternoon tea — not to be confused with high tea — is about more than just the drink. The practice began as a social event for high-class women, and later transformed into a more official ceremony, which often lasted several hours. Small sandwiches were often served, but desserts were the main features. Scones, cakes, pastries, and jams were popular menu items at these events, and if you live near LA, you now have a special chance to get a taste of this British tradition.

Adopting a British tradition

In honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II, England's longest reigning monarch, LA-based British pub The Cat & Fiddle will be serving afternoon tea this weekend, according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook. Reservations are required for dine-in meals, which can be made on the Cat & Fiddle website, but the pub will also be serving takeout orders.

The meal includes three sandwiches: Curried egg salad, minted cucumber and mascarpone, and roasted beef with jalapeño aioli and grilled onion. It will also include a sausage roll, which is a sausage wrapped in fluffy puff pastry dough. And of course, the meal includes several sweet treats for dessert. Anyone who orders will receive an orange-glazed scone, a shortbread cookie, and Tottenham cake, which will come with sides of clotted cream, seasonal berries, and orange marmalade. Of course, as the name suggests, tea will be served. Each order includes the choice of Earl Grey, chamomile, mint, or PG Tips tea.
