Natural Food Storage From Abeego

Natural, plastic-free food storage from Abeego

You shop at the farmers market and buy organic whenever possible. So why would you chill your comestibles in unsustainable plastic bags?

Abeego Designs aims to change the way we store our food, with its line of natural, handcrafted and compostable storage wraps, flats and sheets ($11 to $25).

Canadian cofounder Toni Desrosiers, who has a background in nutrition, started experimenting with naturally antibacterial beeswax several years ago, discovering that the material's breathability makes it ideal to keep food fresh. Tree resin adds an adhesive quality to the material, which bends easily when touched, then stiffens when cooled.

Bundle a sandwich in a string-adjusted wrap. Use snack-size pockets to hold cheese or granola; larger 10- or 13-inch sheets can be molded atop bowls–or right onto fruit and vegetables–and put directly into the fridge.

Abeego's storage vessels are reusable; simply hand-wash in cold water and dry. And with each online order, you'll also receive a packet of Abeebits, thin leftover scraps from the production process that can be used to tie bags, stake plants and much more.

We think we know who's winning the storage wars.
