Best New Halo Top Flavors 2017
This has been a banner month for Halo Top, the cult-favorite line of low-calorie, low-sugar, high-protein ice cream. First, it was named America's top-selling pint of ice cream, and now, it's adding eight flavors to its line of 17 existing pints.
In addition to the new lineup, Halo Top released its first seasonal flavor: the ever-necessary pumpkin pie. It has actual bits of piecrust in it, smells like leaf-peeping and sweater weather, and is delightfully more vegetal than candle-esque.
Scroll through the slides to find out our favorites. And you can trust us on this: We tried each one twice.
One editor went into the experiment hoping this one would taste like a Flintstones frozen push pop. The result? For him, it was spot on. But then he also said it tasted vaguely like crayons. Which, it should be noted, was still an endorsement.
When one person said this one tasted like banana Runts, it was like FedEx arrow syndrome: We couldn't unsee (OK, un-taste) it. But banana flavoring is nothing to get mad at, and this ended up with a few approving nods and many spoon indentations.
Tasting-note opinions ranged from dead-on Snickers to the chocolate protein bar you find at the bottom of your gym bag. We all still took second (and third) spoonfuls.
Some thought the amount of cinnamon was over the top, but that's the point, no? If you're going to eat it, it's because you like cinnamon. The chewy bits of spiced dough are this pint's foil to chocolate chip cookie dough, and they definitely helped catapult this one to a podium spot.
Meet the James K. Polk of low-cal ice cream. The only person who didn't like this dark-horse pint doesn't like coffee-flavored ice cream in general, so that doesn't count. The jury delivered a unanimous decision in favor of this flavor as Miss Halo Top 2017.
Until someone provides proof that this is not, in fact, Aunt Jemima maple syrup frozen via witchcraft, we will remain unconvinced. It truly tastes like someone took every IHOP along I-95 and stuffed it into a pint of ice cream. (That's a good thing by the way.)
Sometimes it's just too hot for drinking tea, and that's why ice cream was invented. Be warned: This flavor is extremely floral, so if you're the type who shies away from rose-flavored food, you might have a negative reaction. But the plump mochi pieces turn each scoop into a chewy adventure, and most of us were shocked by how refreshing and "not diet-tasting" this one was.
It tastes more like sweet potato than pumpkin (and this four-year-old agrees with us), with a vegetal edge that completely took us by surprise in the age of candle-tasting novelty items. Here's the move, though: Take half a spoon of this one and half a spoon of the cinnamon roll, and then you have a real dessert on your hands.
